The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history, with at least 36,417 deaths being attributed to the eruption itself and the tsunamis it created.

The Dutch authorities did a later death tally, and came up with 36,417 people killed by the eruptions.

Most were killed by drowning in the huge Tsunami that resulted from the 4 massive, consecutive explosions on August 27, 1883, that virtually destroyed the island of Krakatoa.

The force of the explosions has been estimated at the equivalent of an atomic bomb 13,000 times the size of the A-bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.

The Tsunami produced a wave over 120 feet (36.5 metres) in height, and perhaps as high as 140 feet (42.6 metres).
