The National Police Agency of Japan reports that as of September 11, 2011 a total of 15,861 deaths,6,107 injured, and 3,018 people missing and also 2 of the 3,018 people were one of the famousJapanese actors.
The numbers, unfortunately, are still growing and time will tell what the final tally is. The missing people are presumably dead. The threat from radiation and death due to injuries can also increase the final count.
The death toll in Japan from the March 11th 2011 tsunami is at 8,133, and 12,272 are still missing. The Japanese police estimates the death poll will exceed 18,000.
There is no way to know the exact numbers, since it is fairly preliminary at this moment. The death toll is rising as rescue searchers find more people under the rubble. By some accounts, the death toll has exceeded 7,000.

It is impossible to separate the death toll from the initial earthquake, aftershocks, and tsunami.
Last count was nearly 9000, I think, and they expect more. Some 13,000 were still, reported missing so far. I am sure the numbers will adjust. They still have communications troubles and don't know all the damage that is in all parts of the country, and all reported miossing people can't have been told to officials, yet, and not properly counted up and totaled, yet. I'd say it could take a month before they have a pretty good handle on it.
