How many people have died in earthquakes?
Excellent question! However, not enough information is available
to provide a specific number of deaths from all earthquakes that
occured everywhere in the world since the beginning of time. I did
some lengthy research on this and I could only find statistics on a
'per earthquake' basis. It has data from the year 1900 forward. For
earthquakes with at least 1,000 fatalities, check out:
earthquakes with over 50,000 fatalities, check out:
U.S. Geological Survey website has a wealth of information! I
highly encourage you to check it out at:
Every year there are about 100,000 earthquakes that are strong enough to be felt by people, but only a few of these are strong enough to hurt people and cause damage. In addition to these earthquakes, there are about 400,000 more every year that are detected by special instruments that can feel earthquakes that are too weak to be felt by people.
It is impossible to determine how many earthquakes there have been throughout history. Earthquakes occur frequently all over the earth, including deep under the ground. Many of these may not be felt by people and barely register on scientific equipment, but they are still earthquakes. There are generally a few dozen earthquakes EACH DAY. See the link for the last 7 days earthquakes. 12
