How many people don't approve of Barack Obama?

It is difficult to answer this question, because we can't really know what goes on in people's minds. It is hard to say whether people "disagree with him" rather than "disapprove of him." For example, some people disapprove of Mr. Obama's policies because they do not share his attitude about the role of government, or they think he is too liberal (most of these people come from the Republican party). But there are others who think Mr Obama was born in a foreign country and isn't really American -- such beliefs are false, but they are held by 19% of Republicans, and we could say these people, called "Birthers", disapprove of him.

If we judge by number of people who voted against him in the 2012 election, 47% of Americans did not want him re-elected. But again, it's hard to say they "disapprove" of him-- many simply disagreed with some of his ideas, or they preferred his opponent, Mitt Romney, because he had a business background. But looking at it the other way, even though America is very polarized right now and both sides hold very strong views, 51% of Americans did vote for Mr. Obama and a big majority in the swing states decided he was the better choice. So, while there were many people who did not want him to get a second term (whether due to disagreement or disapproval), there were more people who either approved of him or agreed with him, and that is why he was re-elected. We can also assume that those who disagreed or disapproved have not changed their opinion, and will continue to be unhappy that Mr. Obama is the president.
