Approx. 6400 people died in the Kobe earthquake most suffocated or were burnt to death in the flames that spread through Kobe on the 17th January 1995.

The government response was awful after the Kobe earthquake as they decided not to take up the offer of other countries, who were prepared to send medics on the basis that they weren't qualified to do medical practices in Japan. Meanwhile the people were freezing as the temperature was -2oC and blankets, food and water were in short supply. Many people lost their jobs and unemployment rose quite dramtically in Japan as Kobe was a major industrial area for Japan.
The Kobe earthquake was extremely strong. It caused an awful lot of damage and many people were devastated with the terrible damage. The strength was so strong that it caused the roads to crack, bulidings to collapes, things to fall aparts and much much more!
According to experts, in the 2004 earthquake near the island of Mindoro approximately 78 people died from the tsunami that occurred after the earthquake.
