17.2 % of male smokers and approximately 11.6% of female smokers will get lung cancer according to a study published by the Canadian journal of medicine. These figures decrease greatly for non smokers with 1.3% of males and 1.4% of females getting lung cancer.

It's impossible to predict. For a start, there are over sixty other suspected factors and BILLIONS of combinations of those factors (all medical conditions are multi-factorial - caused by a combination of factors). Then there are several variables for EACH factor. The variables for smoking include the number smoked per day, years of smoking, filters or untipped, inhaled or not, handrolled or not, lights or normal strength, cigar or cigarette........

Working from Tobacco Control's "'facts' for dummies" would suggest around 1 in 200, although smoking MAY, or may not, be a factor (not a single cause) in each individual case.

Many people, smoking is not the only reason of lung cancer. Other causes of lung cancer, including causes of lung cancer in nonsmokers, include the following:

  • Second hand smoke causes approx 3,000 deaths a year in U.S.
  • Air pollution from cars, factories, increase the risk for lung cancer, prolonged exposure to polluted air is similar to prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Asbestos exposure increases the risk of lung cancer nine times. A combination of asbestos exposure and cigarette smoking raises the risk to as much as 50 times. Another cancer known as mesothelioma (a type of cancer of the lining of the chest cavity called the pleura or of the lining of the abdominal cavity called the peritoneum) is also strongly associated with exposure to asbestos.
  • Lung diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also create a risk for lung cancer. A person with COPD has a four to six times greater risk of lung cancer even when the effect of cigarette smoking is excluded.
  • Radon exposure poses another risk.
  • Certain jobs where exposure to arsenic, chromium, nickel, aromatic hydrocarbons, and ethers occurs may increase the risk of lung cancer.
