He wrote 9 symphonies, the most famous being the 8th, or 'unfinished' symphony, which was actually completed after the 9th or the 'Great', which is the other most famous of his symphonies.

Correction: He wrote the "unfinished" before the "Great" - and never finished it. He began a third movement, but went on to other projects. The symphony was discovered many years after his death.

There are also many who claim Schubert wrote only 7 completed Symphonies + the "unfinished." The Great C Major used to be listed as #7 until they realized it was written after the b minor (the 8th.) And so they renumbered it #9. So now there's no #7. (In fact, there are Schubert symphony sets which list the "unfinished" as #7 and the C Major as #8!)
Believe it or not, Schubert wrote over 600 songs.

Franz Schubert wrote over 600 songs. one of his most famous pieces is The Trout. From life to death, Schubert wrote over 50 symphonies. That includes a mysterious unfinished symphony that he died when he was halfway done with it.

Correction on number of symphonies: Schubert is usually said to have written 9 symphonies, and at most 14 if you include sketches and incomplete fragments. He has nine numbered symphonies, though the numbering has been confused over the years because some publishers skip the "Unfinished" symphony, while some include it as #8, and because his #7 was left only in sketches, and so was left out of some catalogs.

He also left sketches of parts of four other symphonies (assuming they were all meant for separate works). Then there are references from his contemporaries to another symphony that might have been a 14th but is now lost; some scholars, however, now believe this was an early version of his 9th symphony.

Schubert left off work on the "Unfinished" symphony in 1822, four years before his death, so although technically he died before completing it, he was not working on it at the time of his death. It is interesting that this incomplete work is Schubert's most popular symphony; it was ahead of its time in its dark, Romantic mood.

Schubert completed seven symphonies in his lifetime. First were what we know today as the symphonies one through six. Later, he sketched a seventh but abandoned it, then wrote two complete movements now known as the eighth or "Unfinished" symphony. This was followed by a much larger complete symphony, the "Great" C Major symphony, known as number nine. He also sketched and/or completed several other single orchestral movements which could have been intended to be parts of other symphonies. Thus, the completed symphonies are numbers 1-6 and 9. The "Unfinished" Symphony number 8 is the best known of all.

Of works specifically called cantatas Schubert wrote two. The first was an early work for men's voices, "Wer ist Gross," D.110. The second was for six solo voices, chorus and orchestra, "Lazarus," D.689. This was planned as a three-act work, but only the first act and a part of the second still exist.
