Sergei Prokofiev spent his early years of composing in St. Petersburg, Russia, until about 1914. From 1914 to 1916, he spent some time in London without much success. He moved to Paris where he enjoyed considerable success and eventually returned to Russia permanently in 1936.

Shostakovich grew up in a musical family in which both his parents and his older sister made music at home. He began to take piano lessons in 1915 (age 9) and quickly blossomed as a superb pianist. He began composing (informally) within a few months. A few small pieces from the next year or so survive in friends' albums, but he destroyed most of them. He entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1919 (age 13) and started formal study of music. The same year he composed his official Opus 1, a Scherzo for orchestra. There is at least one recording of pieces that Shostakovich composed in his early teens, and it reveals that he already had a substantial control of musical ideas and structure.
