As of November 2015, there are three Pikmin games available: the original Pikmin for Nintendo GameCube, though another version is available for the Wii; Pikmin 2, also for Nintendo Gamecube and also with another version for the Wii; and Pikmin 3, exclusively for Wii U.
There is also a Pikmin-based mini game called Pikmin Adventure in Nintendo Land for Wii U, and Captain Olimar, the main character for the first two games, is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, with Alph, one of Pikmin 3's main characters, available as an alternate costume for Olimar.
Pikmin 4 is currently in production and near completion, though nothing else is known as of yet.
The length of the game really depends on how good you are. The absolute fastest a player can complete the game is in around 9 of the game's 14-minute days, but you have up to 30 days to complete it.
It is possible to have as many Pikmin as you want in storage. Other than that, you can have up to 100 total on the field at any given time. This also includes Pikmin still planted in the ground and in the area which you have still not collected yet.
by example: I did not collect the blue Pikmin in awakening woods so I have to bring 95 pikmin since there are 5 pikmin running around loose somewhere.
You can have an unlimited amount of Pikmin. You can continually reproduce them by carrying dead creatures or pellets to the onions. At one time on the field, however, you cannot have more than 100.
There are currently 8 known species of Pikmin:
Red Pikmin - Resistant to fire, and does more damage. Appearances: All Pikmin games, Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Yellow Pikmin - Can lift bomb rocks in the first game, but cant in the 2nd. Resistant to electricity and can be thrown high. Appearances: All Pikmin games, Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Blue Pikmin - Can swim in water, and is slightly more likely to be eaten than others. Appearances: All Pikmin games, Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Purple Pikmin - Bulky, slow, powerful pikmin. While reds do 1.5x damage, Purples do a whopping 2x damage. And have a chance to stun an enemy when thrown. Appearances: Pikmin 2, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Pikmin 3
White Pikmin - Are speed demons. They are very swift pikmin, resistant to poision, and can find buried treasure. Also when eaten poison the enemy doing substantial damage. Appearances: Pikmin 2, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Pikmin 3
Parasiticus Pikminicus - Also know as Bulbmin. These are a parasitic form of pikmin that infect the body of an enemy, taking control over all actions. These rare pikmin can only be found deep in the caves, and pretty much have all Pikmin 2 Resistances packed together. The god among pikmin. They unfortunately cannot leave any cave. Appearances: Pikmin 2
Gray Pikmin - Also known as Rock Pikmin. These pikmin are immune to Ice and being crushed. While bearing similarities to Purple Pikmin, they are vastly different. Appearances: Pikmin 3
Pink Pikmin - Also known as Flying Pikmin. Not much is known about this species except that they have eyes similar to White Pikmin and can fly. Briefly show in the Pikmin 3 Trailer. Appearances: Pikmin 3

Pikmin 2 is quite a popular but under-rated game. I recommend you play it if you haven't. It is incredibly fun.
You cannot download Pikmin 2; you have to buy the game.
