Somewhere in the area of 279,722 "minor planets" that we know of according to the minor planet center and growing constantly. These are of course dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets which are the majority of the bodies orbiting our sun.

At present, the International Astronomical Union classifies five objects as dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. At least another fifty known objects in the Solar System are dwarf planets. Estimates are that up to 200 dwarf planets may be found when the entire region known as the Kuiper belt is explored, and that the number might be as high as 2,000 when objects scattered outside the Kuiper belt are considered.

Planets

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Known dwarf planets

Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Makemake, Haumea

Possible dwarf planets include

Vesta, Pallas, Sedna, Orcus, Ixion, Varuna, 2002 TC302, Quaor, 2007 OR 10, Pallas, Chaos, Vesta, 2002 TX300, 2002 AW197, 2003 AZ84, 2004 GV9, 38628 Huya, 1996 TL66, 2003 MW12, 2005 RN43, 2005 RR43, 2003 OP32, 2001 UR163, 2004 SB60, 2005 RM43, 2004 UX10, 1999 DE9

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognises eight planets in our solar system (from closest to sun to furthest); Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

A further five dwarf planets are recognised; Ceres (in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter), Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.

Several further dwarf planet candidates have been discovered beyond Pluto's orbit, but are yet to be formally classified.

There used to be 9, but since Pluto is now a dwarf planet......do the math. There are now 8 planets (not including the dwarf planets) in the solar system.
