30 teams with 23 active players each. 30 * 23 = 690 players. This doesn't include any players on IR though. Other players can be called up to replace them and the IR players don't count towards the 23 man roster limit. Teams are only allowed to play 20 players in any game. The normal breakdown is 12 forwards (4 lines), 6 defensemen (3 pairings) and 2 goaltenders. The other 3 players on their roster are "scratches" and are not allowed to participate in that game.
As of 2011, a lot of players are using Dolomites dressed as a widow or an ak. But I think the total ones are a little more popular aswell as easier to get for the players.... I work for the Montreal canadiens and I know that Brian Gionta uses a dolomite dd spyne and it is dressed as a lower end stick.
An NFL team is allowed to have 45 players dressed for a regular season or playoff game. All 45 players may compete in the game.
usually the cut-off is 18 dressed players but as many as 23-25 can be signed but not all dressed in some high school leagues.
Teams can have about 25 players at one time though many keep 40+ players for injuries and such.
