Impossible to say. Polar bears live all across the Arctic Circle, in several countries. They are superbly camouflaged and don't gather in herds. Methods of counting them are very general and scientists hope they are reasonably accurate. But we can't tell how many are dying.
Hunting of polar bears is allowed to native groups in all the countries around the Arctic Circle. There is a quota allowed. In 2011 the quota for Canada is 500 bears. In 2011 in Russia the quota was set to zero. No bears were allowed to be hunted.
Not to say it doesn't happen, but polar bears are great swimmers and are fairly intelligent animals, so the notion of them remaining on a chunk of melting sea ice until it drifts too far away for them to swim back is ludicrous. According to Mel Caper, N.C. Zoologist at the N.C. Zoo, there has been no concrete evidence of polar bears drowning because of melting sea ice.
Polar Bears are well known for many things such as there size, predatory, andd yes, killing humans.
