Red blood cells (erythrocytes) travel around the body constantly, they deliver oxygen and remove waste from body tissues, without them the body would not be able to survive.

Red blood cells need to be tiny in size so that they can squeeze through the microscopic capillaries, ensuring that every cell in the body is oxygenated.

There are therefore approximately 5 million red blood cells per cubic millimetre of blood which means that the entire body contains approximately 25 trillion red blood cells!

Well, it depends on your gender. It goes at is:

  • Male: 4.7 to 6.1 million cells per micro liter (cells/mcL)
  • Female: 4.2 to 5.4 million cells/mcL

So it can be anywhere from the minimum to the max or in between. It can also be raised or lowered my certain drugs. It can be raised by:

  • Cigarette smoking
  • Congenital Heart disease
  • Cor pulmonale
  • Dehydration (such as from severe diarrhea)
  • Kidney tumor (renal cell carcinoma)
  • Low blood oxygen levels (hypoxia)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Polycythemia vera

It can be lowered by:

  • Anemia
  • Bone marrow failure (for example, from radiation, toxins, or tumor)
  • Erythropoietin deficiency (secondary to kidney disease)
  • Hemolysis (RBC destruction) due to transfusion, blood vessel injury, or other cause
  • Hemorrhage (bleeding)
  • Leukemia
  • Malnutrition
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Nutritional deficiencies of:
    • Iron
    • Copper
    • Folate
    • Vitamin B-12
    • Vitamin B-6
  • Overhydration
  • Pregnancy

So there for, it is mostly found between those, but aren't always there. So it's important to keep a healthy, stable red blood cell count.

2.5 x 1013 (give or take a handful!) There are about 5 million red blood cells in every microliter of human blood (on average men have rather more, women slightly fewer). An adult has about 5 liters of blood (= 5 million microliters). So the number of red cells

= 5,000,000 x 5,000,000

= 25 trillion

= 2.5 x 1013
