There is no mention of Jesus in the Old Testament, but there are Scriptures in the Old Testament that speak of a coming Messiah. Isaiah chapter 53 is one of the more lengthly ones and if you compare it to what we know of Jesus' life and accomplishsments it is a very good likness of Jesus Christ.

There is no mention of Jesus of Nazareth anywhere in the Old Testament. If there were any real references to Jesus in the Old Testament, millions of Jews could have been expected to convert, decimating the Jewish faith. That there is no genuine Old Testament prophecy about the life of Jesus, or any other truly demonstrable reference to him is attested by the fact that few Jews ever voluntarily converted to Christianity.

However, Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) says there is a trick that seems to come naturally when studying The Bible. One can ask any question of the Bible and get some kind of answer. If the first answer does not appear to be helpful, one can look for another answer to the same question, until the right answer appears. In this way, since the early apostolic age, writers have managed to find all kinds of references and prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament. There are as many or as few as you wish.

It has been estimated that Matthew's Gospel contains about a hundred references to the Hebrew Scriptures. (Old Testament) About 40 of these are actual quotations of passages.

Is Matthew an Old Testament prophet?

No

Why did Matthew include the messages of Isaiah?

The author of Matthew wanted it to appear that the life of Jesus fulfilled prophecies in the Old Testament. Since it was necessary for Jesus to be born of a virgin mother, he also wanted proof that this had been prophesied about Jesus in the Old Testament. He found passages that suited his purposes, and which he believed would be accepted as genuine references to Jesus, in the Book of Isaiah.

What does the symbol of Saint Matthew mean?

The angelic human symbol of Matthew indicates his compassion and empathy for mankind. Alternatively, Matthew is shown carrying a sword or a money bag (as his profession, before following Jesus, was that of a tax collector in the Gallilee town of Capernaum). (The four symbols - of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, are a Human/Angel, Lion, Ox and Eagle, respectively. These very symbols are mentioned in the Old Testament Book of Ezekiel. There are many connections which the New Testament writings make to Old Testament prophecies. Some say this is a fulfillment of the prophecies. Other scholars say that New Testament scholars retroactively fit their stories to seem as if Old Testament prophecies were being fulfilled. It is up to the reader to draw his/her own conclusions.)
