There are 35 total playable characters, but there is also other characters too that can't be unlocked but can be used in battle if you follow these steps.
1. Zero Suit Samus: Can be used if you use Samus's Final Smash (Zero Laser)
2. Shiek: Can be used when you are Zelda. Press the Down button & the B button at the same time to transform into Shiek. Trasofm back by doing the same
3. Switch Pok'emon: Press the Down button & the B button at the same time to cycle through the different pok'emon while using pok'emon trainer. You automatically use a different pok'emon if you fall off the stage.

35, toon link and wolf are hard to get for toon link go to the forest AFTER completeing the subspace emmisary (i sugest you use captian falcon he is in the door right after you battle a bunch of primids and stuff. And wolf is in the ruins AFTER completeing the subspace emmisary when you are on the platform taking you down there will be a door go in it and you will fall (i think you might have to go through anouther door there too) and you will fall. when you get to the bottom there will be a door in the air go in it and battle wolf. I sugest you use meta knight. just like toon link you need to win at a battle to get them. hope i helped by lego7883
Every character in the game comes from a series with only one character being an exceptions which are Ice Climbers and R.O.B as they have only appeared in one game so far and that was called Ice Climber while R.O.B was actually a peripheral for the NES system. So since there are 35 characters in the game and only two being not from a series Brawl represents 33 different series through the actual playable characters. A couple of the trophies and stickers however may come from various games that may or may not have been in a series like some japanese exclusive games.
