A huge version of this special flag was the one that Francis Scott Key observed in the early morning hours of September 14th, 1814 after a 25 hour bombardment by British warships during the War of 1812. 33, 34, and 35. There were 33 stars (for 33 states) at the start of the Civil War and 35 by the end of the war for the additions of Kansas and West Virginia. Nevada joined the US in October 1864 but their star was not added to the US flag until July 4th 1865. The Civil War ended between April and May 1865 with General Lee's surrender and CSA President Jefferson Davis' capture.
