How many steps does it take for an egg to hatch on Pokemon platinum?

the egg that riley gives you is a riolu egg and it took 6532 steps to hatch for me, hope that helps : )

It depends on what species the egg is from. A riolu should indeed take about 6400 steps, whereas a pidgey takes 3840 steps. The rarer the Pokemon, the longer it takes to hatch.

There is a way to cut the steps in half, however. Put a Pokemon on your team that has the ability flame body or magma armor. Pokemon such as slugma, macargo, magby, magmar and camerupt have these.

The possible range of them could be 1000-10000. The more rare or stronger it is, the longer it takes time to hatch. However, if you use your Bike, the time and the steps needed pass more faster. A recommended place to do this is at Solaceon City, because there is a rather long strip of land.

Also, having a Pokemon with the Ability Magma Armour or Flame Body cuts down the times needed, as well. A example of a Pokemon with that Ability is a Magmar.
