Yes, there are many different types of castles. There are motte and bailey castles, concentric castles and stone keep castles. They were built all over England by King William in the 11th and 12th century.
How old are Stone Keep Castles?
Stone Keep castles (Stone castles) are quite a few centuries old. They were built in the 11th century by King William I (William the conqueror) not long after he took over Britain after the battle of hastings. Stone castles however, weren't the first castles William built in Britain. He first built Motte and Bailey castles. The reasons for this were that they were cheap and easy to build as they were made out of wood. He decided to build Stone castles to replace many of the Motte and Bailey castles for many reasons including these: * Stone castles don't burn * Stone castles don't rot within a few years but will carry on standing for centuries to come * Stone castles were heavier, making them much stronger

Tactically, a motte and bailey left much to be desired as it was a relatively cheap and easy castle to build, and it may have been all that was needed to control an area. In many places, a better castle would have been expensive overkill. wood would burn down and bailey would as well

King William the I (William the conqueror) didn't build all his castles out of stone. In fact, most of the castles he built were made out of wood. These wooden castles were called Motte and Bailey castles. The castles that hedid build out of stone were called Stone Keep Castles (Stone Castles). King William built the Stone Keep Castles out of stone because stone is stronger than wood, doesn't rot within a few years and doesn't burn easily.

In total there were three types of castles: Stone Keep castles (Stone castles), Motte and Bailey castles and Concentric castles. The Stone Keep castles were made out of stone along with the Concentric Castles and still stand to this day as great monuments. The Motte and Bailey castles, however were made out of wood and have all rotted away to leave none left standing today.
