The Australian mainland is divided among 4 time zones during Standard Time and 6 time zones during Summer Time. The Standard Time offsets are UTC+8, UTC+8:45, UTC+9:30 and UTC+10. The additional offsets during Summer Time are UTC+10:30 and UTC+11.

South Australia and all of the Eastern Time Zone except Queensland observe Summer Time from the 1st Sunday of October to the 1st Sunday of April.

The times in other places under Australia's jurisdiction are...

  • Cocos (Keeling) Islands: UTC+6:30
  • Christmas Island: UTC+7
  • Tasmania: UTC+10/UTC+11
  • Lord Howe Island: UTC+10:30/UTC+11
  • Norfolk Island: UTC+11

There is this thing called the Sun. When you look at it you can see colours flashing! This thing called the Earth rotates around the Sun. And guess what Jeremiah, we live on the Earth. So when one half of the world is not facing the Sun it's dark. So to coincide time with light, we made time zones. Any more questions little Billy?

The mainland has four time zones in winter and six in summer.

Including Australia's overseas territories, the time offsets are...

UTC + 6.5 hrs.: Cocos Islands Time (CCT)

UTC + 7 hrs.: Christmas Island Time (CXT)

UTC + 8 hrs.: Western Standard Time (WST)

UTC + 8.75 hrs.: Central Western Standard Time (CWST)

UTC + 9.5 hrs.: Central Standard Time (CST)

UTC + 10 hrs.: Eastern Standard Time (EST)

UTC + 10.5 hrs.: Central Summer Time (CDT)

UTC + 10.5 hrs.: Lord Howe Standard Time (LHST)

UTC + 11 hrs.: Eastern Summer Time (EDT)

UTC + 11 hrs.: Lord Howe Summer Time (LHDT)

UTC + 11.5 hrs.: Norfolk Time (NFT)

Summer Time is not observed on the Cocos Islands, Christmas Island or Norfolk Island, nor is it observed in Western Australia, the Northern Territory or Queensland. Lord Howe Island is currently the only place in the world that observes Summer Time with an offset other than one hour.

CWST is the time in a small piece of southeastern Western Australia. WST is the time in the rest of W.A. In the Northern Territory, South Australia and a small piece of New South Wales, the time is CST. EST is the time in all of the east coast states plus the Capital Territory and Tasmania.

Summer Time begins on the first Sunday of October at 2 AM local Standard Time and ends on the first Sunday of April at 3 AM local Summer Time.
