A standard D cell has 1.5 VDC. Oxy Nickel Hydroxide and Lithium cells have a slightly higher voltage of 1.7 VDC
NiCd or NiMH rechargeable then 1.2 VDC at full charge.
Well I believe each battery has 1.5v, typically your AA, AAA, C, D, batterys have a voltage of 1.5 the size of the battery just determines the amount of life it will put out. Example. Lets say that a piece of equipment requires 3Volts to operate, you can you two AA batteries that is 1.5v a peice and put them in series which means putting the positive side of one battery to the negative side of the second battery, that will give you 3volts. and lets say that with the two AA batterys connected in series the equipment will run or work for 30min.... but if you would've used the D batteries it would run or work for lets say 1hr.
So to answer your question the voltage of 4 D batteries it depends on how they are connected to each other, if all 4 are in series you would get 6volts.

Besides the voltage difference, in parallel, the amperage would double, but in series, the amperage would stay the same.

Four D batteries in series produce nominally 6 volts (1.5 volts per cell). A 12-volt supply may damage the machine built to run on 6 volts.
