France was the dominant military power in Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire except in the 15th and 16th centuries where Spain was the dominant country, before being defeated by France just before the birth of Louis XIV.

Charlemagne, emperor of the Franks is the father of Europe. The Franks stopped the Muslim invasion in Poitiers and established Christianity.

France was leader country in the Crusades and ended defeated just like England and Germany.

France then defeated the English in the Hundred years' War and later helped the US win their War of Independence against the British.

After the Revolution, France crushed all Europe in the Napoleonic Wars but was in the end defeated by Russia and a big alliance of countries (mostly UK and Prussia).

France is a major winner of WW1 and is considered a winner of WW2 (big resistance even after the fall of France.)

French troops are now fighting in Afghanistan alongside the UK and the USA.

So yes, France has been in many many wars and has one of the most successful military histories in the world, unlike many Americans seem to think.

France fought many expansionary wars, such as those under Louis IX, Louis XIV, and Napoleon and France also fought in multiple international conflicts like the Thirty Years War and Seven Years War where their armies were deployed in and conquered foreign regions. Without specifying which war, it would be impossible to answer your question adequately.
