There were 39,366 Australian military deaths and 735 civilian deaths. For more info on Australian casualties in WWII go the the Australian War Memorial site at http://www.awm.gov.au/atwar/statistics/index.htm Sources indicate anywhere from 25,000 to 35,000 in total. The Australian War Memorial lists the totals as 19,235 battle-related deaths and 20,194 non-battle-related deaths in World War 2.

I don't know how many civilians that were not soldiers died but I am pretty sure that 993,000 cilivians served in WWII in the Australian military and 40,464 of them died.

If you take this question in a literal way, those who died in Australia between 1939/45 would include all those dying from the usual causes eg old age, illness, accidents as well as those dying from the war itself. (Presumably, the Death Rate fell slightly if large numbers of Australians were stationed overseas) This would be a fairly small number because Australia was not invaded and only suffered a few bombing raids eg the Japanese assault on Darwin.

Not more than a few hundred. Although the Japanese came close, World War II never completely reached the Australian homefront.
