The NZ wood pigeon, Kereru, inhabits the native forests of New Zealand. They are a very important disperser of the larger seeds from some native trees, such as miro, tawa, puriri, karaka, and taraire.
There are a couple of sub-species on the mainland, and a larger built sub-species (Parea) on the Chatham Islands. Historically they were in Norfolk Island and the Kermadecs, but no longer. The parea had declined to perhaps 40 birds in the 1990s, but predator-proof Fencing has reversed that decline.
They are very easy to capture, unfortunately, and this hunting pressure is a major problem.
Quite a large bird, towards 700g, their flight is somewhat laboured, and the whirring of the wings is conspicuous.
