Typically it takes 4 years of college followed by 4 years of dental school followed by 2 to 3 years of orthodontic residency training.

However a college degree is not strictly required to enter dental school so you could conceivably just do the prerequisites and then apply to dental school after 2 or 3 years of college.

Also there is one dental school in the US that is only 3 years. University of the Pacific. It also has a 2 plus 3 program that lets you do 2 years of college followed by 3 years of dental school. Thus cutting the 8 years of school down to 5.

The Path to Becoming an Orthodontist?

The steps involved to become an orthodontist require a lot of hard work and many hours of schooling. One really has to dedicate themselves to this profession for all the time and work involved. The process begins at the high school level and continues through college where one eventually has to earn a license as a dentist. At this point, further education is needed in the science of orthodontics and then a residency period. At the high school level, students should take the science and math classes such as chemistry, biology, and physics. The same applies for the classes one needs while in college. Once a student has completed the 2 pre-requisite years required at a college, they can then move on to 4 more years at an accredited dental school. During dental school, students are required to focus on more science classes, including microbiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. This time period demands many hours of studying and hard work. Additionally, time is spent in the laboratory, learning the many dental techniques. At this point, under the supervision of a dentist, they are actively treating patients. When the schooling is complete, the students will earn a degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery or as a Doctor of Dental Medicine. To continue the career choice of an orthodontist, the student will then need to complete an extra 2 to 5 years of school in a science of orthodontics program followed by a 2 to 3 year residency program. With all the years of schooling behind him, the orthodontist will be able to diagnose and treat dental problems such as straightening teeth, fixing improper bites, and helping to guide facial development. Many orthodontists start out their career in a practice with an established dentist. This gives them an opportunity to learn skills, gain experience, and save money. With time, most orthodontists eventually open their own private practice or a practice with a business partner. The income of an orthodontist can vary depending on the geographical area one is living, the skill level, if one is self-employed, or employed by someone else. The average salary is around $140,000 a year, not including benefits.
