On July 17, 1918 Tsar Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Tsarevich Alexei were executed in the basement of Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Siberia and then mutilated, burned and buried in the woods. The woman had sewn their jewels into their dresses causing some of the bullets to bounce off of them, fueling the rumors of survivors after only five of them were found in 1991. It was believed that Anastasia and Alexei survived but later two bodies were found nearby in 2007. They turned out to be Marie and Alexei.

In the 1920's a German woman by the name of Anna Anderson claimed to be Anastasia, which brought a lot of attention to the Romanovs. She was labeled a fraud, but many believed her story as well, and it lead to many books and movies telling her story. When the bodies of the Romanov family were found, Anastasia's body was not among them, and the idea that she had survived seemed even more likely. However, in 1998, her body was found just a few miles from where the rest were buried. It was the mystery of whether or not Anastasia had survived that made her so famous.

The Anastasia saga- including derivatives and names-altered take-offs has impacted practically every form of entertainment drama ( including Ice Shows) with the exception of Opera. A number of Rock and Roll songs- none mentioning her by name- hint around it- Ruby Tuesday- look at the first two lines, Gloria, Like a Rolling stone- the Girl is identified as a Princess if you listen from the beginning. One hopes a live action treatment of this saga is resurgent ( pun intended) in Hollywood, now- Blow negative- or as they say in Russian- Anastasia! here used as a command to resurface- on a submarine! There was also a Disney (I think) movie called Anastasia, all about the life of the Romanov Grand Dutchess, but in the movie, she lived, so the facts aren't correct in it all at.

I personally have not found any reference to Bridey Murphy being categorized as the 'Poor Man's Anastasia' but can only theorize that the correlation between the two stems from the claim that Bridey Murphy experienced re-incarnation?
