Why did Anastasia Romanov become so popular?

It was popularly believed that there was one survivor from the cellar in Yekaterinburg when the Romanov family were killed in 1918 - the fourth daughter, Grand Duchess Anastasia. A woman, arguably Anastasia, appeared out of nowhere and provided sufficient doubt to the argument that she may have been Anastasia. Her claim was neither proven beyond doubt, or disproven convincingly. The Russian royal family in exile were not convinced, although at least two of them showed interest. (Anastasia by Peter Kurth 1983). More recently, excavations in present day Russia have revealed what we are told are the remains of all of the Romanov family, all members accounted for by DNA testing.

What happened to the Romanovs after November Revolution 1917?

On July 17, 1918 Tsar Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Tsarevich Alexei were executed in the basement of Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Siberia and then mutilated, burned and buried in the woods. The woman had sewn their jewels into their dresses causing some of the bullets to bounce off of them, fueling the rumors of survivors after only five of them were found in 1991. It was believed that Anastasia and Alexei survived but later two bodies were found nearby in 2007. They turned out to be Marie and Alexei.

What is Anastasia famous for?

Anastasia was famous first and most for being Russian royalty. Her official title declares her a Grand Duchess, and a Grand Duchess is actually higher up in the pecking order than a princess, which means an Empress outranks a Queen. However, why she is more famous than her four sisters is because she was rumored to survive the massacre of her family. The four daughters all had jewels sewn into their blouses, which protected them from the gunfire. It was believed that Anastasia pretended to be dead and escaped with the help of a sympathetic guard. In the 1920's a German woman by the name of Anna Anderson claimed to be Anastasia, which brought a lot of attention to the Romanovs. She was labeled a fraud, but many believed her story as well, and it lead to many books and movies telling her story. When the bodies of the Romanov family were found, Anastasia's body was not among them, and the idea that she had survived seemed even more likely. However, in 1998, her body was found just a few miles from where the rest were buried. It was the mystery of whether or not Anastasia had survived that made her so famous.

Why did people think Anna Anderson was Anastasia?

Many people who actually knew the real Anastasia did not believe that Anna was Anastasia. The tutor for the royal children went to see her and said that if she was Anastasia he was a China man. Anastasia's Aunt Irene (Alexandra's sister) came to see Anna and said that the facial features did not match. However people compared pictures of Anna Anderson and the real Anastasia from similar angles and lighting and said that their ears were similar. A woman who had authenticated the diaries of Anne Frank said that the two had similar writing.

What movies are about the Romanovs?

There was one in the thirties- Rasputin and the Empress, which starred two of the Barrymore dynasty ( unlike Romanovs, tnis dynasty is still afloat). an even earlier film with the odd title ( clothes make the woman- dealt with the Anastasia survival hypothesis. movies proper= there were at least 5 including one made in Germany and having German-language script. The Anastasia saga- including derivatives and names-altered take-offs has impacted practically every form of entertainment drama ( including Ice Shows) with the exception of Opera. A number of Rock and Roll songs- none mentioning her by name- hint around it- Ruby Tuesday- look at the first two lines, Gloria, Like a Rolling stone- the Girl is identified as a Princess if you listen from the beginning. One hopes a live action treatment of this saga is resurgent ( pun intended) in Hollywood, now- Blow negative- or as they say in Russian- Anastasia! here used as a command to resurface- on a submarine! There was also a Disney (I think) movie called Anastasia, all about the life of the Romanov Grand Dutchess, but in the movie, she lived, so the facts aren't correct in it all at.

Who or what was Bridey Murphy sometimes called the Poor Manor womans Anastasia?

A woman from Colorado named Virginia Tighe claimed to be the re-incarnation of Bridey Murphy- a woman from Ireland who lived in the 19th century - Upon investigation - it was discovered that records of 'her life and death' were non existent - It was determined however - that that an Irish immigrant named Bridie Murphy Corkell lived across the street from Tighe's childhood home in Chicago and this was just a memory of her long-forgotten childhood... Anastasia was the daughter of a Russian Tsar Nicholas II. She was presumed to have been murdered with her family by the Bolshevik secret police... Rumors surfaced that she escaped - for two bodies were missing from the mass grave found of the family... Although remains were later found that were thought to be the charred remains of the missing two - many have claimed to be the missing Anastasia- the most popular was Anna Anderson...DNA tests upon her death revealed this not to be the case... I personally have not found any reference to Bridey Murphy being categorized as the 'Poor Man's Anastasia' but can only theorize that the correlation between the two stems from the claim that Bridey Murphy experienced re-incarnation?
