Adolf Hitler worked as a runner (sent messages across the western front) for the German army from 1914 - 1918. He received recognition for his bravery in the form of a 2nd class iron cross and a 1st class iron cross.

Adolf Hitler joined the Bavarian Army* in the summer of 1914, right after World War I started. He served through the war, and was demobilized after the war ended.

Because the Versailles Treaty forced Germany to disband most of its army, Hitler could not stay directly in the army. He became an Aufklarungskommando (intelligence agent) for the Reichswehr. ("National Defense"). After infiltrating the political party that would later become the Nazi Party, he joined for real in 1919 and quit his job in the Reichswehr.

So from 1914 to 1919 makes five years of service.

* = Bavaria was one of four kingdoms within the German Empire and had its own separate army; during wartime, control of the army would revert over to the Kaiser (Emperor). After the war, Germany was no longer an empire, and Bavaria was no longer a kingdom. Bavaria then became a state in the new German republic, which it still is to this day.
