We celebrate the Independence day in honor of our beloved country after being liberated from the Spaniards. It occurs once a year to remember the noble cause which most of the Philippine Heroes sacrificed for.
At first, Chinese traders used to call it "MAI"(ma-ee). When Ferdinand Magellan discovered it, he called it archipelago of St. Lazarus/archipelago of St. Lazaro because on the day he first stepped in the Philippines, it was St. Lazarus' feast day. After several years of conquering the Philippines, he named it Philippines to honor king Philip II of Spain. Filipinas, on the other hand, is the Tagalog/Filipino translation of the English word Philippines. It was recognized and declared as Philippines(feely-phins) by the Americans and Spaniards as well.(the Americans followed after the Spanish occupation in the Philippines for 333 years)
The Spanish period in the Philippines lasted from 1521–1898. During this era, the Philippines was a colony of Spain. The influence of Spain during this era has carried over into modern day Philippines. There are many traditions which still exist that originated with the Spaniards.
Deped's theme for United Nation's day in the Philippines is "Peace and unity to everyone."
