Four years of college are required (in which the pre-med curriculum includes four semesters of chemistry with lab, two semesters of physics with lab, two semesters of Biology with lab, two semesters of calculus level math, two semesters of English). Four years of medical school are then required, two of which are pre-clinical years, and two of which are hospital and clinic-based years. After becoming a doctor (M.D. or D.O) internship lasts one year, and then residency lasts between three and seven years (depending upon specialty chosen).
The key to becoming a doctor is to take one semester at a time, and make sure to study for a few hours every day (or, at least, five or six days out of the seven day week). In college, the three and one half month summers may be productively used to gain experience in a lab or doctor's office or other health-related area.
