There are no requirements to farm. Many land grant colleges (Michgan State, Penn State, Univ of Illinois, etc..) have BS & MS programs for a variety of ag related careers (agronomy, soil science, animal science) but you don;t need a degree to farm. Check with your local county extension agent for more info. They would be most helpful for you.

There are no college requirements for a farmer. The most significant quality, is a love of the land and for what it can produce through hard work and perseverance. That being said, great strides have been made since the time of our forefathers, and a college education can be extremely beneficial, especially in agricultural science.

A bachelor's degree in most areas can require between 124 to 128 college credits particular to a specific program of study. This would be based on a college or university that operates on a regular two semester academic year which is the most common. For institutions that operate on a tri-semester or quarter-semester it would be quite different. Most jobs in the farming and food processing industry require a bachelor's degree, but a master's or doctoral degree is usually required for research positions at universities. A Ph.D. in agricultural science is also needed for college teaching and for advancement to senior research positions. Degrees in related sciences such as Biology, chemistry, or physics or in related engineering specialties also may qualify people for many agricultural science jobs.
All States have a land-grant college that offers agricultural science degrees. Many other colleges and universities also offer agricultural science degrees or agricultural science courses. However, not every school offers all specialties. A typical undergraduate agricultural science curriculum includes communications, mathematics, economics, business, and physical and life sciences courses, in addition to a wide variety of technical agricultural science courses. For example, degrees in animal sciences may include courses on animal breeding, reproductive physiology, nutrition, and meat and muscle biology. To teach within the public school system in the United States at the pre-K through high school levels, you must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a teacher education program from a regionally accredited college or university and state teacher certification. This would take approximately four years to complete as a full-time student, provided you take the program as prescribed by the college or university. Individuals who already have at least a bachelor's degree but not in an education program, can obtain certification to teach specific courses through the Alternative Route Program within the state they wish to teach.
