theres various ways to become a firefighter. you can always volunteer which make up more 80% percent of the united States fire protection or you can go career. To go career you have to go through some kind of fire academy. you can go to a fire academy affiliated with a college or go through a fire academy affiliated with a department. for example..if you go to a fire academy affiliated with a department for instance HFD (Houston Fire Department) you go through the academy and then they put you on a probationary period. (remember you are still getting paid through all of this)..and basically if you pass through their academy you are a paid firefighter through them and remember you also have to have your EMT-B to be paid.

You don't need to go to college. Fire departments have their own training, so you apply to one, and they will train you. If you attend some community college classes that may help you move up in the system of a fire department. The more you know the more you make.
