That depends on the state. At least a 4 year college degree and a Masters are mandatory. A Masters can be one or two years. And then there is a requisite for supervised professional practice hours, generally 2000-3000 hours with 200-300 hours of supervision. After that is completed, you need to sit for a licensure exam. And after you pass the exam and get licensed, there is a requisite number of CEUs to take per license year and/or certification period. All told, you're looking at 5-6 years of school, and 2 years of professional service before you are eligible to sit for the exam...and many -- actually most -- don't pass the exam on the first time round. I had one social worker who worked for me, and was quite good at her job, fail it 6 times...that's 3 years, as it was bi-yearly. The CEUs are on-going for as long as you maintain your license. It's generally 15-30 credits per year. but then aqain you have to pass it the first time because who wants to do another 3 years of college and its already tough.so just pass it the first time. thank you for your time
four years

It is different from country to country. In the US, you would finish a 4-year college degree in any major. Majoring in social work may take some requirements off of a graduate program, but not necessarily; it would depend on the graduate program you choose. You can earn a master's degree in social work in two years, and some programs may offer accelerated programs where the time can be reduced. Also, many programs will give you additional time to complete studies in more than two years if necessary. Before being able to practice as an independent clinical social worker (one of a few different uses of the degree) you will need to earn a certain number of supervised practice hours on the job, and pass a state licensing examination. These requirements and the time frames to complete them will be a little different from state to state.

Licensed clinical social worker

This is a social worker trained in psychotherapy who helps individuals deal with a variety of mental health and daily living problems to improve overall functioning. A social worker usually has a master's degree in social work (MSW), and has studied sociology, growth and development, mental health theory and practice, human behavior/social environment, psychology, research methods. Thus, the approximate length of time is four years to complete a bachelors, and an additional two to three years to complete the masters. The length of time also depends of the credit load taken each semester.

The following is written by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor and particular to the education and training required for social workers.

A bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) is the most common minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker; however, majors in psychology, sociology, and related fields may qualify for some entry-level jobs, especially in small community agencies. Although a bachelor's degree is sufficient for entry into the field, an advanced degree is required for some positions. A master's degree in social work (MSW) is typically required for positions in health and school settings and is required for clinical work, as well. Some jobs in public and private agencies may require an advanced degree, such as an MSW with a concentration in social services policy or administration. Supervisory, administrative, and staff training positions usually require an advanced degree. College and university teaching positions and most research appointments normally require a doctorate in social work (DSW or Ph.D.).

In order to become a social worker, you have to get through enough schooling to complete a Master's Degree in Social Work. This is called an MSW. If you plan on doing counseling, you need to be supervised for six years after school before you get your license.
