According to the US EIA (www.eia.doe.gov) North America has about 275 Trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. They say the US is burning this at a rate of 24,536,309 Million cubic feet a year. This would mean at this rate we will be out of Natural Gas in 11 years.

serperate writer- 275,000,000,000,000???

and that divided by 24 million is 11 million years by the way, not 11 years

** another writer : he said 24 536 309 million... that is 24.5 trillion a year

The last major estimate for oil was made in 2007, It is estimated that there are about 1,327 Billion Barrels In the World's Proved Oil Reserves. Although the World will never actually "run out" of fossil fuels, It will reach a point where it isn't going to be a valid energy source because the money involved in tapping the wells would reach a higher price than the actual oil.

The United States has estimates of over 400 years of oil in the Bakken and Green River Reserves. There is additional oil in many other parts of the world.

Russia has also provided a theory that oil is caused through Abiotic methods and successful wells have been dug using this theory. If true we may have many generations of oil left.

This doe not mean that the use of oil and fossil fuels does not have problems associated with it.

Realistically we will not run out of oil for several hundreds of years.

The United States alone has over 400 years of known reserves inside the Bakken and Green River fields. This oil is not has sweet and easily refined though as other oil available.

There is also some question as to how oil is created. Until fairly recently, oil was believed to have taken millions of years to develop. There is a current stream of thought that says oil is actually not made the way we thought it was, but is actually abiotic. These people point to the refilling of some oil fields in just a few years.

If this is true, we may have many added years of oil beyond the several hundred we know about. If not we still have about 500 years or so of oil.
