In 1945, after the unconditional surrender, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation - British, French, US and Soviet. With the onset of the Cold War this turned into a division between East (Soviet) and West (US, British, French). The division was formalized in 1949.
Germany was a collection of individual states, some of whom formed the Holy Roman Empire, until 1871 when they unified under the control of the Prussian king Wilhelm, who became Kaiser Wilhelm 1. Austria was not involved in this union. However, in 1949, after the defeat of Germany in World War 2, the Western Allies (France, Britain and the US) merged their zones of occupation to create the Federal German Republic (FDR), so the Russians named their zone the German Democratic Republic (DDR), creating East and West Germany.
Several Times:
1871 - Germany formed but excluded Austria, leading to the formation of an Austrian state
1919 - Germany lost World War 1, 20% of territory was given to Belgium, France, Denmark, and Poland
1945 - Germany's eastern half was given to Poland.
between 1945 and 1948 - East and West Germany formed out of the occupation zones.
In the last weeks of WW2 Russia got to Berlin first and took control and then came the allies. When the war was over an agreement was made that Berlin would be divided into 4 sectors. The allies got 3 of the sectors and the Russians one. ( Cold War) The Russian sector became East Germany while the 3 allies sectors became West Germany. The Brandenburg Gate became the crossing point between the east and west. Finally, the Russians built the Berlin Wall to make sure that people didn't escape to the west. To keep people in they put troops, barb wire, had a no man's land, and machine guns, but even with all of this people did escape. In 1989 the wall came down and Germany was unified.
Germany was divided East and West from 1945 until 1990. During that 45 years West Germany became an economic powerhouse.
In the above answer, for "Berlin would be divided" read "Germany would be divided". The city of Berlin was divided as well, but that was a result, not the cause of the split of Germany.

Germany lost WWII -- the territory had to be divided among the winning countries. Ultimately, the plan backfired on the Allied Powers as the Cold War set in. An example of the tension created by the divide is the construction of the Berlin Wall.
