If that's a continuous load of 40 watts, you need quite a large battery, depending on how long the demand is. Car batteries supply more than 40 watts when running the cars lights when the car's ignition is switched off, so I guess something like a motorcycle battery would suffice.

The current is irrelevant. What matters is the voltage. For a lamp to operate at its rated power, it must be subject to its rated voltage (that's why both the rated power in watts, and the rated voltage in volts, is printed on the lamp).

To determine what current this combination of power and voltage draws from the supply, you simply divide the rated power by the rated voltage.
