Solomon's temple cost about $ 140,381,000,000, according to the measure of talents recorded in the New International Version. The price could be much higher, because it does not include the stone, wood, animals used for the sanctuary services, precious stones, and labor.

Based on amounts recorded in The Bible, it has been estimated that over 20 tons of gold were used in the building of the Temple.

In researching the cost to build the Temple today, material and labor costs must be taken into account. Besides the precious metals, there were hundreds of massive stones, each weighing many tons, which had to be transported; and there were huge cedar beams which were brought from south Lebanon. tens of thousands of workers assisted in the Temple's construction.

The total cost of building the Temple today has been put at over 150 billion dollars.

(It is important to note that much of modern construction such as cranes and steel-framing which help to keep costs down did not exist 2000-3000 years ago.)

Why did the Jews tell Jesus in St. John's gospel it took 46 years to build Solomon's temple?

They told Him this because it was true. It did take 46 years to build Solomon's temple. If you think of how they had to build everything back then, it would take seemingly forever to build anything. They had no electric/battery operated machines. And they also had to do all the heavy lifting without any help...other than more humans. And If you know the story, the temple is rather large. So it is believable that it took that long to build the temple.
