It depended of the size and the features of the houses. Only the richest lived in a detached house (domus). Middle income people and the poor lived in tenement block (insulae) six to seven floors high. The domus must have been very expensive. It included a garden surrounded by porticos, a pond, statues and mosaics. There were also villas which were holiday houses and could be even bigger than a domus.
