It entirely depends upon the nature of the mechanical toy in question, and also where you buy it.

Small clockwork toys with plastic bodies can be bought for less that a Pound Sterling or US Dollar, and then it just goes up through the whole range until you can buy elaborate self-propelled cars, extremely complex and luxurious doll's houses and so on for prices over a thousand pounds or dollars.

In the US, the dollar buys more for your money than the Pound in Britain or the Euro in the EU, so Americans can usually afford to get more elaborate mechanical toys for their children than elsewhere in the developed world. Having said that though, toys made in the Far East, such as China or Taiwan, are cheaper to buy anywhere than those made in the West, since production costs are lower.

I have deliberately not included things like remote-controlled aircraft, model railways and mini petrol-driven vehicles, as these are hardly 'toys', more like models, and have at least as great a following amongst adults as children-often greater!!
