There are three levels of subscriber-ship for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

1. Free To Play - Pay nothing at all, ever. You can play two characters all the way to level 50 and not pay anything. Severely limited in game features and what you can have and use.
2. Preferred Status Players - This is where free to play members have bought something from the SWTOR.com store (Cartel Coins, Physical Security Device, or Digital Upgrade Pack). Less limited than Free To Play, but still not full access.
3. Full Subscriber - You pay a monthly subscription, and get access to all of the games features.
