The starting salary for RN's differs greatly depending on different regions of the country. For example, in the southeast, RN's can earn as little as $11 an hour if they work in a school setting. If they work in a hospital setting, they can earn $15 to $18 an hour. In the northern states, a new RN can make as much as $20 an hour. It also depends on how short staffed the institution is.

What do RN start off making?

Depends on where you live and the demographics of each region where RN's are employed for work. RN's who work for hospitals make considerably more than nurses who work for clinics or private offices, but then again, you became an RN for the unbeatable job security, and not the high pay. My brother's fiancee makes 36 an hour as an RN, my other brother's girlfriend, (I have two brothers), makes about 40,000 a year, but she was making more when working at a hospital.

The starting salary of a Registered Nurse can range from around $28,000-$50,000 per year on average. The starting hourly wage of an RN can range from $16.50-26.00 per hour. This salary will increase over time, as nurses gain experience, certifications, and specialize in a specific area. Registered nurses can also advance their career to managment postions, in addition to regular raises offered by employers. Keep in mind that these figures can vary depending on the location. RNs in East Tennessee, for example, may start at an hourly rate of $18, while an RN at a busy New York hospital may start at $26 or more.

This will vary widely from region to region due to multiple factors including cost of living, availability of nurses, experience, specialty, and any labor union influences. In my region of the country an average annual salary for an RN would be around $58,000 per year. What is the average hourly wage of an RN?

It depends on how long you have been a nurse. In Kansas my starting RN salary was $21.49. This goes up with years of experience. You also have the potential of making more then that, many hospitals offer extra shifts where they pay you bonus money per hour to fill holes in the schedule, for example our extra shift pay is $10.00 extra per hour.
