Granite is stone. And it's heavy. It has a density of about 2.75g/cm3 which means it's 2.75 times as dense as water. A block of granite that was a cubic foot in size would weigh between 171 and 172 pounds.
Feldspar and quartz, with a hardness of 6 and 7 on the Mohs Scale respectively, are the minerals that give granite its abrasion resistance. Its hardness is due to the interlocking crystal structure as it cools from melt, making it among the hardest of rock types.
Heavier is not the term to think about, because heaviness is also linked to size - a big boulder of marble will be heavier than a granite pebble and vice versa.
What you need is a unit that a famous ancient Greek fellow called "Archimedes" discovered called "density".
Water has a density of 1.00
Marble has a density of 2.563
Granite has a density of 2.691
This mean that if you have a piece of marble and a piece of granite that are the same size (volume), the granite will be slightly heavier.
The density of granite is approximately 2.75g / cm3. As such 1cm3 of granite weighs:
9.81 x 0.00275
Weight of 1cm3 of granite = 0.0269 Newtons.

Generally granite will be too heavy and fragile to make harpoons.
because they would be too heavy
i think it's too heavy
When they found out that granite bats were too heavy.
For a table granite may be too heavy, but for a countertop granite is a popular and beautiful choice!
Feldspar is a 6 on the hardness level and diamond is the hardest t 10. Feldspar is not very heavy- about the weight of granite or quartz (the average rock)
It would be easier, and cheaper, to go ahead and yank out the old counter tops. Granite tends to be thick and heavy so you don't want to compromise it in any way. I'd go with the granite only.
Let me laugh a second. Well granite countertops are nice, heavy, and have a classy shine in most cases. People just like them I guess.
The best thing about granite countertops is that they dont burn / melt if you place a hot pan on them, they are easy to clean and do not hold onto bacteria. The worst thing about granite countertops is that they are very heavy and can crack if hit hard with a metal object such as a meatclever.
It can be. Radon, heavy metal leaching come to mind. For more info go to solidsurfacealliance.org or forum.solidsurfacealliance.org
Its heavy as hell old boy, trust me ive shovelled it meself
Granite is expensive due to mining operational costs, fabrication costs, and shipping costs.
