How much does it cost to check if the timing belt needs to be replaced for a 1998 Mazda 626 LX 4-cylinder auto trans and how much to replace it?

There is really no "check" when it comes to timing belts. The cost to get to the belt to look at it would be the same as if you were to go and replace it. Typical timing belt costs range from $200 - $500 depending on make and model. Most manufacturers recommend a timing belt replacement of at least every 60,000 miles so if you have met or exceeded this mileage, consider having the belt replaced along with the water pump as well, since the water pump is usually accessible when the timing belt is worked on.
