Rabbits take alot of work. They need a fair amount of maintenance and vet bills can be expensive. They are like any other pet in the fact that you need to supply them with food, water, dry bed and shelter. Once you get a rabbit it is like a dog, they need check ups at the vet and this can be expensive. But it is defiantly worth it.
We have two rabbits and they're not expensive, providing we use our hay, newspaper. etc properly. When it comes to health and illness they can get pricey as sometimes just a trip to the vet can be £30.00.
A rabbits hutch should be clean and safe, and to keep the cost down on food and supplies, try using newspaper instead of sawdust to soak up the wee, and change it every morning. Normally rabbits wee in their nestbox/sleeping area, so put newspaper all over it covered with a few handfuls of hay. Change the newspaper every day, and change the hay every 3-4 days. Rabbits dont each much but should have a constant supply of food, so every time you feed him, make sure he doesn't scoop it out with his paws like mine do, to prevent from wasting food. Pet shops sell different size bags of food and hay, so go in and have a look for prices. Also get a book on rabbits that covers everything from health to brushing them. I'd recommend 'Rabbits' by Sue Fox.
First answer: about $100 with vet costs and food.
A different answer: The vet costs alone can be $100, and if so that's a good year! No, a rabbit costs much more than that, something like $400-$2,000 a year. It depends on where you live, what resources you have access to, your rabbit's health, and how good you are at finding deals.
People who live in the country and small towns can save a lot of money by going to a local farm or feed store for their hay, and sometimes for other supplies too (like pellets, and aspen chips for the litter box). The supplies available in stores in the city usually cost more money (sometimes LOTS more). Country vets also usually charge less than city vets because their own expenses are lower (like rent/mortgage for the building).
Either way, you have to make sure you're buying high-quality items. Many pellets on the market are very unhealthy, and usually the better options are more expensive. Also, the hay that farms and feed stores sell, while less expensive, is often an alfalfa-grass mix, which isn't healthy for most adult rabbits. (Healthy adult rabbits should eat only grass hays.) Good rabbit vets also charge more than normal cat/dog vets because they've had to take extra training - although a cat/dog vet might agree to see your rabbit, they can make some serious (even deadly) mistakes.
For supplies, you can save money or be totally extravagant. A used exercise pen or dog crate is a fine enclosure for your bunny and won't cost you much; or you can buy a custom-designed condo for hundreds of dollars. Same with toys and play structures: a plain cardboard box with two holes cut in the sides makes a great toy, or you can buy a special playhouse for a couple hundred bucks online.
Your rabbit's health can also be a huge expense. If your rabbit has a problem and needs regular vet care, this will cost you - it could be a genetic problem, or congenital, or e-cuniculi, or something else.
