If they are the same as BMW they wear with the pads and must be replaced to reset the light Regardless of any engineering answer, they are a wear part of the braking system and connected to the electronic controls you rely on like ABS......they cost $2. You decide. I just changed my pads and rotors and you should always change the sensor as they wear with the pads. The sensor for my c240 cost me $17.00 at Mercedes. You can also get them on eBay if this is a little expensive.

According to other sources I have found in researching this question on the web .. the problem is most likely the Shift Lever Assembly. A failure of the Shift Lever Assembly will prevent the Ignition Key from being removed from the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Failure of the Ignition Lock Cylinder may prevent he vehicle from starting. The cost to repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder is estimated tat $21.54 for parts and $39.00 for labor.
