The following quote applies to mechanical horsepower.
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia says, "The term "horsepower" was created by the engineer James Watt in 1782. Watt (1736 to 1819) is most famous for his work on improving the performance of steam engines. Watt was working with ponies lifting coal at a coal mine, and he wanted to define the power available from one of these animals. He found that, on average, a mine pony could do 22,000 foot-pounds (lift a bucket of coal weighing 22,000 lb. a distance of 1-foot) of work in a minute. He then increased that number by 50 percent and fixed the measurement of horsepower at 33,000-foot-pounds of work in one minute." Under this system, one horsepower is defined as:

1 hp = 33,000 ft·pound-force·min−1 = exactly 745.69987158227022 W

The Wikipedia answer above is a perfect definition of mechanical horsepower, which engine designers call BrakeHorsePower, or BHP, but doesn't tell us how to calculate a motor's power.

This is not so easy to do. Taking the simple example of an electric motor, measuring (or specifying) the power consumed by the motor, then dividing kW by 745 gives you some idea. It won't be quite right, because some of the power going in is lost in resistance losses in the motor's electrical circuit. Allowing for this gives the gross mechanical power produced, but it's not all available to the outside world. Some is lost to friction in the bearings and brushes, and aerodynamic drag on the rotor. That's the easy one. Calculating the BHP produced by an internal combustion engine is very complex.

The real world answer to the question is - for internal combustion engines we don't calculate BHP - we measure it. The standard method is to use a brake-band. (That's why it's called Brake horsepower.) The output shaft is fitted with a pulley. A band is placed on top of the pulley, with its two ends hanging vertically down at each side. Each end is connected to a spring balance. One balance connects directly to the test bench, the other to an adjustable tension setter. The tension is set to a suitable value; both balances now read the same number - the tension in the belt.

When the motor runs, the indicated balance readings change;their sum is still twice the tension, but the difference indicates the drag on the pulley. When the rpm of the engine is measured, the pulley diameter (d feet) x rpm x pi gives the linear speed of the pulley in feet/min. Multiplying this by the drag (lbs) and finally dividing by 33,000 gives the BHP.

Depends how much work you want the motor to do. Some motors in, for instance, digital cameras, work on 3 volts or less, but a motor to raise a bridge needs a 3-phase supply at high voltage.

How many watts does a 3 phase 20 hp motor use?

You would need to know the efficiency of the motor to determine its input power, which would, of course, exceed its output power of (20 x 746 =) 14.92 kW.

How do you convert hp to amp?

HP/.00134= Watts Then Watts divided by Volts = AMPS For expample. a .75 HP electric motor running on 220VAC uses 2.544 amps .75 / .00134 = 559.7015 Watts then 559.7015 / 220 = 2.544

Is your power into motor equal to your power out of motor at no load?

For a motor's output power to equal its input power, the motor's efficiency must be 100%. As no machine, particularly a rotating machine, can possibly achieve 100% efficiency, there is no condition under which its output power can ever match its input power.

Slip power in a induction motor?

slip power is a power which is develop by the induced voltage and current in an induction motor

What is the kva for 7.5 hp 3 phase motor for 1 hour?

1 hp is generally around 750 watts, so you can expect a 7.5hp motor at full load to be ~5.6kW.If lightly loaded, the motor will draw less current, thus less wattage. Also, you cannot calculate current directly from the kW rating and voltage (so full load current will not be 5600/230 = 24.3Amps), as motors are not 100% efficient, and do not have 1.0 power factor. I'd expect the full load amperes to be greater than the kw/voltage value by 20-30%.I looked up a Baldor motor stated to be 7.5hp, and it was ~7kVA, 5.6kW at full load.Another AnswerYou don't specify whether you want to know the machine's output power or its input power. The rated power of a motor is always its output power. In North America, this is expressed in horsepower whereas, in the rest of the world, this is expressed in watts (in practice, kilowatts). As 746 W is equivalent to 1 horsepower, then a 7.5 horsepower motor is equivalent to 5.6 kW.If you wish to determine the rated input power to a machine, which is always larger than its output power, then you must know its efficiency at its rated output power. Divide the output power by the efficienty (expressed as a per unit value).

What motor has more power one at 120 volts or one at 208 volts?

The voltage of the motor does not determine the power. However it does determine how many Fla... Or full load amp it will have when the motor is at highest speed. Usually the lower the voltage the higher the amps On the same motor. Most motors will have a name plant with this information and you should always get the amount of horsepower motor you need and make sure it will be compatible with your power source.

How many kw can a 12 volt motor generate?

It depends on the current rating of the armature winding, which will determine its input power. It's output power then depends on the motor's efficiency.

What is full load current of 2HP induction motor?

Since (in North America, at least), the horsepower of a motor describes its rated output power, you need to know its efficiency in order to determine its input power, then its rated voltage, to determine its full-load current.

How many amps does a 5.5 kw 380 v three phase motor draw?

Current drawn = 5.5 / (1.732 X Voltage X power factor)AnswerWithout knowing its efficiency, you cannot determine the input power to this motor (5.5 kW is its output power), so you cannot determine its current.

How many electricity consume 5HP motor in 1 hour?

I assume you are asking how much energy a 5-hp motor will consume in one hour? The first thing to understand that a motor is rated according its output power which, in North America, is expressed in horsepower and, elsewhere, in watts. So, the output power of your motor is 5 hp, which is equivalent to 5 x 746 = 3730 W.Next, you need to find out its full-load efficiency. You then need to divide the output power by the efficiency to determine its input power -remember, input power is always higher than the output power.Once you have found out its input power, convert that into kilowatts and multiply it by one (hour) to determine the energy used in kilowatt hours.
