5-7 quarts depending if the torque converter is empty. with the engine off put fluid in till the stick shows filled. then start the engine and run the tranny thru the gears starting with 1st, 2nd and drive, cycle till operation is smooth then check fluid level while in park and idling and make sure it's dipstick reads in hashmarks full.
Definetely MORE than 5-7 quarts if the Torque converter is empty ! More like 12 quarts.

Dexron 3, or 4 works just fine.
On a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria : Using a funnel , you add automatic transmission fluid through the ATF fluid level dipstick ( in the engine compartment , near the firewall , on the passenger side of the engine )

As far as I know, all automatic transmissions get filled through the dipstick tube.
You can use the regular power steering fluid from you local auto parts, or use Dexron III transmission fluid. Either is good.

4.6 L engine. Do you mean how do you check the fluid? Hood open, passenger side, between the back of the engine and fire wall, theres the dip stick.
