The karat marking on an item is how many parts out of 24 is pure gold, the rest being alloy mix. Thus a 14 karat item is 14 parts PURE gold and 10 parts alloy ( copper, zinc, silver , or nickle) . A 14 karat ,14k item is 58.5% pure gold ( 14 divided by 24) . 25 on an item has to be something else, for .25 meaning 1/4 diamond or a style number , etc
