The beloved 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz had an operating budget of $2,777,000. At the box office, it grossed $3 million. There were advertising expenses that hadn't been included in the budget. And so those involved in the film's production didn't consider the film a success until its re-release in 1949. The re-release brought in an additional $1.5 million.

When it was first released in 1939, no. The reviews were mostly lukewarm (one reviewer called it a "stinkeroo"), and it did not really make any money until they started licensing it to TV networks around the holidays. It's made tons of money since then.

$3, 017,000, in 1939. The budget had been $2,777,000. But MGM spent money on an expensive advertising strategy, with the film's release. So they may have lost money. However, all costs were recouped, with the film's re-release in 1949.

It is not in the short run that the movie "The Wizard of Oz" made lots of money.

Specifically, the film was budgeted at just under $2,800,000. Film showings generated about $3 million in revenue. So it amounted to a small profit, which grew over time and particularly with runs on television.
