The retirement benefits received by former Presidents include a pension, Secret Service protection, and reimbursements for staff, travel, mail, and office expenses. The Presidential pension is not a fixed amount, rather it matches the current salary of Cabinet members, which is $191,300/year as of March, 2008.

In 1958, congress passed the "Former Presidents Act" to make sure that those who had been America's chief executive would spend their remaining years with no financial worries at all. The basic annual amount that a former president receives is $191,300. A former president also gets support staff and travel funds, as well as health insurance for life.

Of course, ex-presidents can earn money from other sources such as lectures, serving on corporation boards , writing books, and so forth. Most of them have many opportunities to make money if they so choose and are in good health.

However much he can get someone to pay him.

Former vice-presidents do not draw a salary automatically. However, because the vice-president is also the president of the senate, they may be eligible for pension benefits under the congressional pension system. This doesn't kick in until they reach retirement age (exactly what this is varies depending on length of service, and they can take early retirement at a reduced rate if they want), and they have to have served at least five years (i.e. two terms as vice-president, if they weren't already in congress, which most of them will have been) to be eligible.

The exact amount is complicated, because it depends on the number of years of service, how much of it was before 1984 (when the law changed), and their salary during the highest-earning three years of their service.

As of January 2015, the Vice-President's salary is $230,700. Assuming they served the minimum 5 years at that rate (and had no other congressional service), their retirement benefits under FERS (the post-1984 system) would be 230,700 (highest salary over three consecutive years) x 5 (years of service) x 0.017 (accrual rate), or a little under $20,000.
