First, there are no complete statistics kept on bullying. At best it is guess work. Second, clothing, actions, looks, speech, appearance, anything that can be isolated as seeming different are all reasons for one to bully another; it is impossible to narrow down one element as the focus of bullying. The reason for this lies at the heart of bullying.
Despite all the hype recently about bullying in society, it has existed for as long as people. It is intrinsic to animal behavior. It can be broken down to one thing: the recognition of difference. Where it goes from there is a matter of the bully and his personal motivations and drives. That bullying occurs is a serious matter, not because it occurs so much as how others deal with it.
It will never be possible to totally eliminate bullying behavior. The best that can be hoped for is to teach better coping strategies. This is not to imply that anyone should allow anyone to bully another. Quite the contrary, it must be addressed as soon as it is demonstrated. However, it is far more important, critical even, that those who are bullied must be taught appropriate and effective ways of responding to it, and supported by other responsible people in their journey to do so.
By way of post-script, the only effective and surest way to deal with a bully is to bully them back. Bullying is primitive, immature, atavistic behavior and the bully must learn by experience just how it feels to be the target of it. Teaching by example, showing that bullying can help reinforce this, but the bully must be conditioned away from the behavior.
A lot of kids get bullied for their clothing. Preps and gangsters don't really get bullied but emo kids and scene kids get bullied a lot. People call emos and scene kids names and that is a form of bullying.
Kids don't get bullied because of what they wear. They get bullied because bullying is not stopped. Kids are or should be under the care of adults wherever they happen to be. Sometimes kids deal with a variety of issues that lead to appearances or behaviors that are not typical for a given population. But it is the adults who are responsible for helping kids deal with those issues, and for stopping bullying by others. Bullying is not acceptable; not ever.
