Depending on what you mean by "traditionally," it should be somewhere between $100 and $1,000 per acre. You can narrow this figure down considerably by specifying such things as how much total acreage to be produced, farm equipment available, field crop history, field soil test results, soybean variety to be produced, etc.

There is too much potential variability involved to answer this question reasonably. Depending on how well the farmer grows his crops, what kind of growing year the crop gets, and current market prices when the beans are sold, it can literally be anywhere from a few hundred dollars down to a complete loss where it cost more to produce than the income received.

The industry average is 40 bushels an acre.

In 2009 the price per bushel was about $9.50.

Cost is not much less then that, when taking into consideration land rental, taxes, equipment and time. You would need a lot of acres to make anything worth talking about.

Why is there no corn or soybeans produced in the west?

Corn and soybeans can be grown in the western US, and corn is frequently grown in the vicinity of livestock operations such as feedlots. However, since most of the west is much drier than eastern parts of the nation, all crop production depends on irrigation. The money earned from corn and soybeans is, quite simply, considerably less than higher value produce crops. If a farmer can earn $500 per acre profit from a potato crop, for example, why would he limit himself to a $100 per acre profit growing corn? Many areas simply do not have access to sufficient water to irrigate a corn crop.
